Dear Community Leaders and Concerned Citizens,

Rising South Literacy School is the organization that published This Man, Jesus, If Angels are Men, Making Mary, No Bubble Bath for Desmond, and Flowers While You Live: A Tribute to Dr. Henry and Mrs. Nell Bradford, pioneers at Alabama A&M University. Dedra Muhammad has authored and produced three other plays, and Making Mary is a five star novel based on a true story. One of Muhammad's favorite reviews is "Making Mary is as well written as Barack Obama's 'Dreams of My Father', only Making Mary is more intriguing and contains a lot more suspense." Sheldon Barnes

Dear Concerned Citizen, I aim to peak your interest about Rising South Literacy School's community projects:

The name of our not-for-profit organization is Rising South Literacy School. We desire to give young people, as well as mature adults an opportunity to display their talents without the use of vulgarity, and to send a positive message about unification, regardless of one's race, religion, creed, sex, or nationality. In this upcoming production, we use art to encourage our audience to consider the negative impact of the continued use of such language as the "N" word.

Our largest recent project was the musical "If Angels are Men", the story of a group of 1864 slaves who dream of a better way of life, a world full of peace. Their dreams allow them to majestically bound from 1864 to the 1930's, and then to the 2000's. We have included a tribute to our beloved Michael Jackson in his loving memory, as well.

The last song is after the cast call, and in fact is sung by the cast and directed by choir director Michael Taylor of Oakwood College. We intend that the audience will have a good feeling when they leave the theater, imbued with the spirit and the desire to make a change for the betterment of our community and country at large. As they exit, and as some stay behind for the last drop, they will hear We are the World.

Rising South Literacy School's recent project, If Angels are Men, is a community affair. The vast majority of the cast members live in Madison County, and are taking advantage of free acting, dancing, cultural, and liberal art classes. We are happy to have Zacharias the Singer to join us all the way from Atlanta or this perormance. You can see Zacharias on the (New York) Apollo on February 10, 2010.

This site and all information within it is used and is intended to bring awareness to domestic violence, the need for literacy, to encompass cultural, religious, artistic, and the liberal arts.
The play, If Angels are Men was an avenue to bring awareness to cultural issues; the play is intended to unify people regardless of race, religion, or creed.
The end of domestic violence, the killer can only be in sight when literacy is at its highest. Ignorant people use guns and their fists to make a difference.

We at Rising South use art as a means of expression to make a point.
Domestic Health and Abuse Awareness Symposium----The first one took place on August 20, 2005 and it was a huge success! We will do this in your area:
Abuse Symposium With refreshments and entertainment,
dialogue and support, education, and
healing
The panel discussion brings about many issues--the main issue at the last conference was the female's role versus the male's role in marital situations. Lots of sensitive topics also fell under that umbrella. We plan to have another symposim as soon as possible in Huntsville or one of the nearby cities. If you would like more information, or if you would like to be a part of the symposium, please send an e-mail to that effect.

The name Rising South Literacy School and its meaning is derived from the position that we must rise to occasion of life itself, as opposed to death which is the absence of positive energy. Taking an artistic approach, we desire to allow individuals to express their talent without the use of vulgarity and/or the perpetuation of negative characterizing.
Literacy encompasses a wide scope within our program, and cultural literacy is only one aspect of what we try to incorporate into our classes and rehearsals.

Thank you and be blessed!
